About CSR and how we understand it

What is CSR?

CSR stands for Corporate Social Responsibility. It is a notion assuming that companies develop such corporate management strategies which in a sustainable manner take into consideration the economic, social and environmental dimensions in the enterprise’s daily operation as well as contacts with stakeholders. Although not obligatory, the CSR strategy as part of the company’s culture – regardless of the size of the business - may determine its standing and competitiveness on the market. This is so as business benefits can be pursued not just through sheer profit maximisation but also intangible benefits which do have an impact on the trust shown by the customers and, consequently, the strengthening of a given brand. One of the key challenges for Managers of the Future is making companies more interested in including social and environmental issues in their business operations.

Who are stakeholders?

A company’s pursuit of its business goals is closely linked to the relations between the enterprise and persons or entities (stakeholders) who can impact its operations and others influenced by the company’s operations. Identifying the stakeholders and taking care of maintaining good relations with them makes it easier to reach the goals spelt out in its CSR strategy more effectively and efficiently. The stakeholders include insiders within the organisation (like its staff) as well as its broadly understood environment (such as clients, suppliers, NGOs, and the community where it operates).

CSR + D

This is a notion which includes disability as a theme in the company’s CSR strategy, "D" representing the first letter of the word disability. The current definition of disability, which stems from the social model of disability, defines it as a result of mutual interactions between a person with a given type of impairment and barriers In his/her social environment. Making it possible for the disabled person to fully participate in social life on an equal footing with other citizens can be done through changing the conditions in the environment which restricts his/her effective participation. The socially-oriented approach to disability anchored in the CSR+D strategy promotes the empowerment and potential of persons with disabilities as well as evokes the principle of equal treatment which consists in ensuring equal rights for them but also enforcing the performance of their obligations linked to such rights.

Sustainable development

Sustainable development is a process aiming at meeting the needs of the living generations and maintaining the benefits for the future ones. Pursuing the goal of the mutual balancing of the socioeconomic and environmental consequences of development is of key importance, which should go hand in hand with care for the environment as well as the introduction of technological and institutional changes facilitating the reasonable use of natural resources. Investing in sustainable development is an opportunity for enterprises to not just boost their competitive advantage but also contribute to the development of the communities in which they operate.
